Yes!  We can plant year round… just be mindful of these tips when planting in the heat of summer.

1. Plant Heat-Tolerant Varieties

Choose plants that can handle high temperatures and humidity:

  • Zinnias, vinca, pentas, sedum, grasses, portulaca, celosia, gaillardia, bougainvillea, coreopsis, roses, coneflowers, salvia

  • Shrubs and trees approved for zone 8a

2. Be mindful of how important watering is

  • Newly planted shrubs, trees, annuals or perennials have small immature root systems.  The only water they can access is the water you provide to the root ball.

  • Be mindful in summer that you must supply that water source until the root system matures and can access water deep below the soil surface.

  • Early morning watering is best… but thorough watering is even more important.

  • Water deeply to encourage strong root growth.

  • Don’t rely on sprinkler systems for new plants.

3. Mulch Generously

  • Apply 2–3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

4. Provide Afternoon Shade

  • Our afternoon sun is HARSH.

  • Use shade cloth or plant taller crops to shield sensitive plants from the harshest afternoon sun.

  • Keep in mind plants that are getting more afternoon sun will need more water than the same plant in afternoon shade.

5. Use slow release fertilizer

  • Too much nitrogen packed fertilizer in high heat can stress plants. Use a slow-release fertilizer to keep feeding gentle and steady.  We recommend Microlife or Holly Tone.
